Asking Men to Roll in Jiu Jitsu

I think most women at one point or another have been intimidated being in a room filled with mostly men - especially when you've recently started and you have to ask the guys to roll. How do we navigate this? What happens if they say no? Here's my two cents :) Let's be friends! Instagram : @kimberlyannkinch TikTok : kimmymuck Let's work together! Email : kimberlyakinch@gmail.com

You bring the awesome content 😊
I am thankful I found your page! Thank you for sharing your story. My surgery is tomorrow. I too am very active and had pretty much gotten back full mobility after the accident and I will be starting from scratch tomorrow. How many weeks was it after you tore your hamstring that you had surgery? My surgeon doesn't use a brace afterwards, but your experience of wearing the brace makes me want one...to feel more secure post surgery. What type of brace did you have?
09:23 = facts! Mfrs think they’re John Danaher
Tips when rolling with guys 1. Be mindful of our balls 2. Dont go 100% when we’re going 30% 3. Most of us are socially awkward af, please forgive our “Scaring The Hoes” type vibe we’re giving off as we’re uncomfortable around u 4. Remember we’re letting u work; u might get some subs on us (cuz we let u) 5. Remember, ur here to also defend urself. In a real fight against a male adversary there’s no stop using strength or lets start on the ground Ideally, everyone should roll/talk w everyone. Unfortunately we’re still in this taboo period where A LOT of ppl dont roll nor talk to the opposite sex I been training at my bjj gym for 2 years, there’s females there tht i have literally never spoken to
I read that a guy is typically 30% stronger than a woman of the SAME weight, so if you factor in the extra lean weight men typically carry, you are looking at a huge disparity. I doubt that even the most thuggish guy ever uses anything like his full strength against a female parther, although it might seem to her that he is.
Thanks for sharing your story Kimberly! I'm having my surgery in 3 days and I am so glad I came up it. I'm an OT so I have the gadgets just needed to find someone with a positive and realistic outlook about the milestones. Hearing you reinforce the importance of moving, getting up and dressed, getting outside is a great reminder too!! Thanks again!!
I’m SO glad this video was helpful!! Best of luck with your recovery! :)
Great video 👍Jiu Jitsu is the ultimate 💚🥋🙌🏻
You really do a great job at explaining in detail every part of this process... I know it's been a while now, are you back to normal? How long has it been now? Cheers and blessings.
yes, totally fine now! Back to training jiu jitsu - I’m still careful but I don’t feel limited. It’ll be 2 years in September (so crazy!!). I would say the only thing I really feel is soreness more easily, compared to the other side. But it goes away after a good night sleep to recover :) Have you had this surgery??
❤
😅 im much seasoned as a 4 stripe white belt. I take on quite a few females at my dojo, i usually don't reject nor get angry at anyone when we practice technique and spar. Despite the fact im one of 4 ppl whom are the tallest, im more concerned i don't get submitted in less than 5 seconds XD
Excellent video! Everything you shared was exactly what I experienced with my hamstring repair surgery. I'm one week post op and am excited to try some of your exercises during PT.
From a males perspective, I’ve been training a long time and some of the most technical roles I’ve had have been with women. So don’t let yourself think that you don’t have value when rolling with bigger stronger opponents
This is very helpful, thank you. Getting married this August😊
Thank you so much for the ideas. <3
You could afford a second tent and a whole other set of chairs but you went with disposable place settings?
Yup! I didn’t want to clean dishes, which we would have been responsible for. And it turned out great 🙂
"toxic jiu jitsu schools" ... okay, so ... just jiu jitsu schools in general ...
I agree with everything you did for your wedding and want to have pretty much the same at mine. Its a marquee wedding in Ireland. Hiring costs are coming in mind boggling expensive. But i dont want to cut out anything as it will only cause stress for me on the day. Majority of guests are travelling from other parts of the country so cant rope them in to help. Not sure its something ill be able to justify the cost of 😔
Hey Kimberly, question about engaging your core in regard to not wanting you ribs to flair. Is this also the same with squats, or do you want your ribs to flair out with squats?
I just started for a month. I honestly don’t feel comfortable rolling with female. I’m more conservative I guess.
How did the rugs go to dance on? I love this idea but don’t know
It work out great! We did have a ton of logs (benefits of a woods backyard wedding lol) to sort of anchor the corner of the rugs down too.
Thanks. I do wish you'd talked about how to properly pick up and release the dumbbells, because they're often super heavy and difficult to pick up with just one hand, making me worried also that I'm putting the wrong kind of pressure on my back or knees. For releasing, I often find the DB to land a bit too close to my feet for comfort... That's when training with the heaviest weights I can, which I have not seen any demonstration video do even though most programs recommend RPE of 8 to 10 (close to failure, which implies heavy weights).
There are beautiful disposable event dinnerware out there. Using disposable creates more need for cleanup versus bussing/washing/packing or paying extra and bussing/packing moderately food-free dishes to be washed by provider. There's always a trade off with choices.
I had my surgery March 27th, 2024. It is almost 10 weeks post opp and I'm still walking with crutches. I'm feeling defeated. When I do hobble around on my own, my knees hurt. I'm a mess 😢, just want to get back to being active. I shouldn't complain, there are worse off people out there....
Good stuff....😊 BJ
Very good video u hit the nail on the head we had the same injury. I'm on week 2 and I'm very independent and walk, workout, do some light weights to try stay in overall good health also eat right I'm alot older in 60's but I felt every comment u said it's very hard for me mentally and physically I can't do what I want are did. Today was first day of PT so I'm on the road to recovery I can't wait to get off crutches and this aggravating brace...when I get back I will take it easy and be very very careful this was a eye opener for me u never know how great thing are until it's taken from you...I admire u and have respect for your video good luck and continue to improve. May God have us both and all others back as close as we were before....I don't ? GOD about my injury he didn't want me somewhere during these weeks and months so I accept his plan...u only videos I see and I'm Happy I found you on here...wish I was close get your husband to help me recover like he is helping you...much ❤ and support for you both. ..thanks GodBless....BJBeagles.....that my channel name..😊
This was extremely helpful thank you!
Plz figure four headlock challenge plz grab your boyfriend in legs and squeez him don't leave him he's tapping but not leave him 😂
So many questions I have been struggling with this pain for over nine years, finally diagnosed as high string, hamstring tendon apathy, and I just found out that there is actually a surgery. Would love to know if you have a video more about how they determined that this was what you needed. What else have you tried? What kind of Dr. Even does this surgery so many questions thanks.
Accurate video. I’m day 7 post surgery. Long haul. Get outside. Shower. Both made me feel way more normal.
I have a question. I'm new to BJJ. My coach or Sifu does mixed Marshall Arts and he is a black belt with 13 yr of Jiu-jitsu. He just started doing Jiu-jitsu classes with one day a week. He does Carlson Gracie style. I would like to train more and there is a BJJ by my house but it is Carlos Gracie. If you train two different styles or names will that affect my training? Or should I just stick to one school one style?
combat sports/ martial arts are always going to be male dominated...we are build for war-females are not they are build for making children. I am glad to see women train tho-good for you guys-fitness is good and BJJ is good for fitness. Here is my question to YOU: if up until recently you felt uncomfortable training with men why would you choose to start a martial art that is always going to be mostly men? have a great day and i hope youre still training sinc ethis video is 3 years old
This was really helpful, thank you! Do you have link to the amazon flowers you used?
I’m currently going through an injury now. I have severe sciatic pain that started from the piriformis. I’m trying to let the inflammation go down and let the body heal as much as possible but it has been very difficult to sleep at night, walk, lie down or sit . Sometimes the pain is so severe that I cry at night and my back goes into spasm so I’m finding this very difficult to deal with as I’m pretty much stuck, unable to do any normal day to day activities 😢 Thank you for this video. It’s really helpful to hear this and how you’ve felt when you initially got injured ❤
Congratulations on your new journey 🙌🏾🙏🏾🥰! You got this and will find the time to do your videos.
Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
I'm 44 years old and just starting my BJJ journey. So far Im having fun, but I'm trying to remember everything. I just remember to keep showing up and listening to others' advice. Thank you for your channel. It's been inspiring. I think another way to eat oats is to make it like a bar or a cookie. You can make them into mini bits and eat them on the way home from training. That way you're not eating at 10:00 at night and you get the fiber that you need for longevity.
Yay welcome to jiu jitsu!! So happy these videos have been helpful :) Oh my gosh i was JUST saying that to my husband today, about making little protein balls or something!
i really hope youre not drinking raw milk, raw milk can kill you lol i doubt they sell raw milk, thats a sure way to catch a case as a company. and a very bad thing to put out into the world, some little girls might be watching this and thinking raw milk is a good idea, but raw milk can carry dangerous bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter. other than that, enjoyed the video!
I'm absolutely drinking raw milk! I respectfully disagree with you. We purchase the the milk from a reputable farm that's clean and takes proper care of the animals. Raw milk is extremely nourishing and I would love for boys/girls/men/women to see me drinking it so that they can become aware of it and educate themselves :)
@@kimberlykinch Im sorry, what are your credentials for "respectfully disagreeing with me"? Several people have contracted tuberculosis from raw milk, in our lifetime, this isn't just some folk tale story I'm telling to scare people off. It's legitimately dangerous, and I hope you choose to educate yourself instead of turning a blind eye when you clearly know nothing on a scientific level about why milk is pasturized.
Ridiculous.
@@charissekeys9176 I don’t know why you’re trying to aggressively start an argument with me lol. I drink raw milk and I believe that it’s nutritious when purchased from a reputable farmer. You don’t have to drink it or pay attention to anything I’m saying if you don’t agree with it.
That colour at the beginning looks great on you
Thank so much!
How do we feel about crock pot life? Put your meal together before you leave and it’s ready when you come home. I have been making a roast on Sundays (Mississippi roast) with roasted potatoes and carrots and then I just heat those leftovers up in glass containers in the toaster over at 350 so when I get home from jits I pop in my meal I’m the oven. A side salad is easy to throw on the plate too. Making a big pot of rice on Sundays with 2 full racks of pork ribs I have also done that. Put them in before church and Slow cooked them all day until dinner.
I do like the crockpot life!! I need to look up some more recipes :)
New white belt. I've been training for about three months, getting smashed repeatedly. I am new to your channel. Love it!!! Wonderful to see a female bjj practitioner share her ideas. I usually have mixed "dry roasted" nuts (no seed oils), salted if you need to replenish your salt after training. Prepare ahead of time a protein shake with whole milk yogurt, mixed berries, and nuts on top for extra protein.
Thank you so much for watching!! I'm happy that you're enjoying your training :D Yeah agreed, I feel like the simplest thing would be just a protein shake hehe
Woke up to a new video notification and was so excited to do my makeup / have my coffee and listen 🫶🏼💙 Love what you said in the car about BJJ. It’s definitely meditative.
Omg that is LITERALLY my routine with the youtubers i watch! Thank you so much for watching 🥺🥺🥺
Your meals are veeery similar to mine! But I’m the same, post training I just want to eat something quick, shower and go to bed. Would a quick protein shake help? Maybe blended with banana or berries?
A protein shake would probably be easiest! The problem is I want a giant sandwich or something at 10pm hahaha.
2:40 😄 As far as I know, they are allowed to list it as 0 calories when the actual calorie content is less than 10 calories per serving. Also one serving is a quarter second long spray which is impractical. In reality one average spray probably ends up being 50-75 calories. In my opinion, best way to eat when cutting is prioritizing boiled foods. Apparently, it is also the "healthiest" way to cook meats since they won't be exposed to high temperatures. I read about it in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.
They're so secretive and tricky :( I'll have to read that!
Protein shake post-w/o. Simple and done. No guilt 🤙
That'd probably be the easiest thing!
Thanks, love your videos…how on earth do you keep your long hair looking so lush & not battered….my hair gets ripped, broke ends - just dead it’s always looking crazy becuz of jiu jitsu, especially the 4 hour days of rolling… pls need advice im older too (47) so i have that mixed gray blonde silver hair kicking….also was that a knee bar (dog bar) at end of your roll or did time run out either way nice rolling….thx again..🤘🏻🔥🤟🏻🤓🫶🏻 post meal: I have chicken & rice pre cooked/prepped so I can just heat it up & eat half (small portion) or prep a yogurt bowl….
Thank you SO much for watching!! Time just ran out :) I was in her half guard, sort of I think - or maybe I got into her close guard, I forget hehe. Yeah I need to probably prep another meal lol. For my hair, to be honest I think a lot of it is just genetics lol, my mom had amazing hair when she was younger. But I do try to oil my hair once a week, I'm not entirely sure if it's doing anything though lol.
That song was 🔥what’s the name? Yalls content is only getting better
Ayyy thank you!! 🔥 The song is “Bom” by Say3 I think. It’s from the sound platform that I use. We always have Brazilian funk/hiphop playing in the gym so I tried to get something similar where I wouldn’t get copyrighted lol.
Hi I had my surgery yesterday severe pain first day and sleeping was tuff first night. Day 2 is a challenge. I have to buy a bar stool today...throat sore and had alot vertigo from anthesisa. Will only take tylenol...like you.
Hope you're feeling a bit better today! Yeah I had a sore throat the first day too from the tube they put down.
Yeah feeling alittle better the incision is really painful only taken Tylenol want take the other meds...Thanks for checking on me made me feel good....❤😅 take care ...BJ
Your content is truly amazing 😊
Thank you!!
Hey Kimberly, thanks for all the videos about your recovery process. I picked up a similar injury about 2 weeks ago and I was feeling quite lost about what the next steps would be. Your videos are a gold mine. My tendons are thankfully not completely detached so my doctor is confident I will recover without surgery even though I am still looking at a 4-6 month recovery time. In my case, it was due to an inexperienced training partner trying a risky submission on me during live rolls (I think it is called Suloev Stretch), I had no time to tap and felt my hamstring pop right away - incredibly painful. Worst of all, I keep replaying the moment in my head over and over and it is causing a lot of mental stress. I feel like I don't even want to return to the mats because my trust in training safety has been shattered. Although I am sure I will get over with time. I would appreciate if you have anything to share about this matter. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
Oh gosh I'm so sorry that you've experienced this in training! It's just awful. No one understood how much pain I was in the night it happened. I felt the same way about replaying the injury in my head. Even now if i think about it, it makes me cringe. For a long time I didn't want anything to do with jiu jitsu, mainly because I was bitter that it happened to me and it was SO hard envisioning myself doing jiu jitsu with the state that my body was in. But I still knew that ultimately the big goal was to return one day. I think if you keep it in your mind that you WILL return one day, that keeps the motivation going through all of the PT and all of the strength training that's required in order to do so. You'll know when you're ready to starting trying out some jiu jitsu movements again. Your body will feel ready. I tried at 6 months and felt pretty good, but still felt unsafe in class so I took a break again until I felt 100% ready. Take it slow, listen to your body and don't feel pressured by team mates because ultimately they don't truly know how tough it is to come back from this injury. Best of luck with your recovery!!
@@kimberlykinch Thank you, I appreciate the advice and words of encouragement. Definitely feel a lot more confident finding some content about this injury in the context of BJJ 🙏
Good deal....love good news....BJ❤
